Dune: Part One Review (No spoilers)
——————————————
I went into this film knowing nothing of the source material. I left the film NEEDING to dive deeper into this incredible Sci-Fi world. This is an amazing film but a good movie. Let me elaborate, the world building is phenomenal, acting is top notch as it should be from such incredible group of actors and actresses, cinematography is interesting my friend, Riley, described it best “The beauty lies with it’s simplicity.” I initially wasn’t a fan of the color palette and some of the shot choices but after hearing Riley’s statement it swayed my thinking and I agree with him. The lighting was one of my favorite parts, when you are filming in the desert you don’t have as much to work with so variation in the lighting, as well as shooting in different times of the day, is important, and Dennis did an incredible job. The sets were also amazing, I felt like I was in a different world.
As for a Sci-Fi epic I expected more “Movie Magic” and was left with a very slow building simplistic story that may suffer from “Part 1, 2 lag”. Where I was expecting some raw in your face action or big moments we dealt with more of a slow burn. Which after sitting and thinking about it for a day I felt approaching it in the manner they did worked out well for what it was going for, if that makes sense. It goes back to Riley’s statement “Beauty in it’s simplicity.”
A guy like my dad, Steve, he wanted a bit more from it. He left feeling like all he saw was a couple different factions or houses, some betrayal, a precious resource that the galaxy needed, a giant worm, and a lot of questions. He said he’ll still see the next one/ones so he was intrigued enough. As for my girlfriend Ashton she felt like it was a mixture of Star Wars and Game of Thrones, which is a weird mixture but after you see the film I feel like that accurately describes it the best.
Ultimately, I very much enjoyed myself, my imagination ran wild, and it’s 100% worth a trip to the cinema even if you leave liking it or not.
