An almost unbearable watch.
I can’t help but compare this to modern horror movies like hereditary, that subtly cue the audience into some profound themes, slow burns to truly horrifying images, every shot, angle and line perfectly and intentionally curated, and Easter eggs that want to make you watch again and again. This is horror
The Deliverance is low-brow trash. It screams its themes into your face repeatedly, fails to make any character the slightest pit sympathetic, oh and of course, it’s not scary. The “horror” sequences are so poorly executed and the entire thing is chaotic but not enjoyably so. I cringed at this movie and would recommend you don’t waste your time with it.
Parcast actually did a great podcast on the Ammons family haunting. If you’re interested in the story that inspired this garbage, I’d recommend that instead.
