Note that I’m writing this while only up to the 9th episode of the first season. There’s a reason why I’ve never heard of this show or even knew it was based off of a book series: they suck. I may read the books to see if I’m right, but, if the structure and development is anything similar to the series (which, most of the time they’re not I’ll admit but with series they tend to have more of the books than the films do, so it could go either way), then yea my original statement is accurate enough. The characters are so poorly made and executed it’s physically painful and enraging to watch. Truly I had to force myself to make it this far in the hopes that SOMETHING might click and make them all fall into place. Nope. Honestly I even correctly predicted the sequence of events from episode 1. The tropes and typical desperate formulas used by rushed andor disinterested writers was no Scooby Doo mystery to solve. And yet I hoped that the characters would somehow break free by the 5th episode and not be so predictably enraging. Nope. And OF COURSE they had to play the “don’t do drugs” trope and make the ex/bitch-female friend “fall from grace” and turn to street corner magic, blame her male friend who CLEARLY was in love with her and she knew but decided to ignore and abuse him because he is the mousy nerd boy, then go to rehab so she could run from the “queen pin” of the drug gangs so there wouldn’t be a war (to which they made ZERO references to or connections to or ANYTHING at all. This magic chick just pops out of nowhere as the boss, gets her memories back and then suddenly becomes the most powerful magician around? 🤦‍♂️ Who wrote this? A high schooler?), then finds god from the ward preacher who, shocker!, is also a powerful magician that leads her back on the path of grace - even though she still totally blames her ex-best male friend for her choices and lack of magical abilities even though he clearly could have done nothing but for her memories erased again or worse. Yea, not anywhere close to marry magician to me 😂🤦‍♂️ Yes, I’ll continue to finish the series but would I recommend anyone watch it? Maybe for background noise that you don’t care about or even pay attention to. Other than that, nope. No cohesive plot. Character development is atrocious to non existent. Way too many useless additives. Overall, if you don’t have an actual passion for the project - don’t waste the time and thousands to millions of dollars on another clearance bin project. It’s degrading to the viewers and to those involved in the project. Hell Disney AND his entire team worked on the first hand made cartoons for FREE during a war because they were passionate about their project. Stand your ground, no matter your position in the movie making process, and demand passion and care from everyone involved. If not, you’ll all sink in the same ship and lose more than just a few thousand bucks. You’ll lose the will to create entirely.
