These are times when we are all listening a little more carefully to how we talk about history. I generally like Gordon R., but these are the notes I made in a journal I keep after listening to him talk:
Gordon Ramsay, traveling through the Zula territories of Africa, spoke of influences on the cuisine: "In the 1800’s, large numbers of immigrants were brought from India to work the cane fields." The words come out so easily that you’d miss the almost certain fact that these were slaves brought from India to work the cane fields. It’s so easy to blur the past, to sanitize, to lie.
Make no mistake,
when you sanitize,
you lie.
