DeHaan makes possibly the best “Billy” yet, both historically and entertainment-wise, whose characterization of the noted American outlaw improved the production in general. Other than DeHaan, the film is lackluster in virtually all phases of production. While some genuine dialogue adds a certain authenticity, the film suffers in general as being yet another rendition of “Hollywood’s Version of Events Tailored to Reach A Certain Market”, which is Hollywood’s job, when you think about it. Mediocrity aside, DeHaan’s “Billy” is a wonder. As a historian, I enjoyed his performance during the escape sequence and as a film buff, everything else.
