I am a fan...and a loyal one. Each character on the show represents a member of my family. I was hooked from Season 1 and I am now watching Season 3 with my son.
Penelope's parenting style is very similar to mine and Papito has very many of the same characteristics as my son. These commonalities give my son and I opportunities to speak about topics that are normally uncomfortable to bring up and we get each other's point of view through the character's portrayal. So...this wonderful show is not just entertaining, but it is impactful, and necessary.
Does it discuss politics and over emphasizes the lesbian experience? Yes. Do all the other parts of the show overshadow these factors? Yes. Does Penelope cry too much? Yes!
Lastly, I'm not a Latina, but it is refreshing to see a Latino family that is this multidimensional speaking about as many issues as they can pack into a season. I just wish hispanic shows embrace black actors the way black actors embrace them. Overall, amazing 3 seasons and it keeps getting better.
