Super cute. And definitely keeping the overall theme of dickens. I appreciated how the movie touched on the reality that success is actually born out of lifting others up, and not the whole “rat race” concept that has been portrayed time and again. In my experience, success has always been achieved through humility and curiosity. I really liked how Farrell’s character embodied this. Hollywood accidentally said the quiet part out loud, again… because it’s what people actually resonate with and know to be true.

It's ok. Tom Blyth was 2 dimensional, while Rachel Zeglar might as well have been a cartoon character (the accent is atrocious and a joke). I did enjoy Viola Davis as the mad scientist, but even that was a bit much. I haven't read this book, in particular, but the movie just seems so canned. Also, tell me you use autotune without telling me you use autotune... I honestly started doing other things like 45 minutes in.

It’s beautiful. The acting is superb. The action sequences are precise. However, the story and characters feels trite. It is a classics hero arc, which we can all love, but there was nothing particularly compelling about these characters or their lives. Beowulf leaned into faith and tradition, Star Wars leaned into Philosophy via the force. But this came across as bones, not meat. As a rough draft. It all felt a bit uninteresting. And I love Zach Snyder’s work, and I love the actors he chose. There was just a missing thread. That being said, the objective beauty of the film still makes it worth a watch on Netflix.

Sooo much potential. Too political and woke. The whole “resilience” schtick was too much. I’m white, my white parents worked 4 jobs. I worked 3 to put myself through college. I now work 2 and still live in someone else’s basement. I’m certainly not decrying injustice. Just bad economic policy 🤷🏻‍♀️ Like, I’m here for a Hispanic super hero. But when my Puerto Rican boyfriend makes more than me without a degree, the whole racism subplot looses us. He disliked it more than me; called it infantilizing…

Definitely not for everyone. The raw and clunky nature of this film only highlights the raw and clunky nature of a life and love. It was weird, and sad, and beautiful and a bit hard to watch when it hit a bit too close to home. I don’t get the sense it was meant to be particularly poignant, but rather just particularly…honest. It felt as though I was watching actors act out moments from my own life and, rather uncomfortably, my own inner dialogue. I thought it was painfully lovely. Billie is fantastic.
