I was a devoted fan of the original Lost in Space. This new series is a disappointment. First, it is science fiction... but the story is quite unbelievable. In many situations, the show moves at an unrealistic pace of disaster to recovery in what seems like minutes on the show. Often the show seems more magical than scientific in the way things are explained and then "fixed". The old "Dr. Smith" though eccentric was not quite the apparent psychopath of the new Dr. Smith. The family seems to be hyper-intelligent but miss the fact that nothing quite adds up in the life and words of the new Dr. Smith. The apparent gender change of the Dr. Smith is lost on many people today, since many MDs, PhDs and JDs are in fact women. The most off-putting thing to me about Dr. Smith is that she is a lunatic and no one seems to notice.
The psychological and physical trauma suffered by the main characters is exhausting. Not only to the characters, but to the audience.
I still do not know if I am comfortable with the new robot. It is far too scary and dangerous to have it playing with a child. Why none of the family members recognize this is more of a mystery to me than the robot itself. All of these issues point to the conclusion that the director wanted to create a tension as an obvious, driving factor in the show. Unfortunately, the characters don't seem very human to me.
