I adore Alex Wolff, so of course I felt I needed to give this a try. Right out the gate, I loved Nick. Alex's acting was (as usual) impressive. He was naturally charming and I was immediately invested. The little bits of backstory regarding Nick and his parents were very interesting and well done. However, this film focused way too much on cliché teen drama tropes. Nick's friends were unlikeable and irritating. Whenever Nick was around his friends, I couldn't wait until they were off screen again so we could return to the genuinely investing parts of the story, which were HARDLY touched on. Unfortunately, his friends took up most of the screentime. So for the majorty of the film, I was waiting. Honestly, the people he associated with kinda turned me off of Nick as a character and made me wonder if I really wanted to root for him in the end. Maybe it's a personal preference, but I would have enjoyed this movie a lot more if it focused on Nick's past and personal struggles rather than his stupid, ignorant, uninteresting, arrogant friends and the sorta lifeless love interest plotpoint which had a resolution that left a lot to be desired. There were points in the film that had some very engaging dramatic sequences, like the argument between Nick and Cal for example. Cal was a great character and I wish we spent more time getting to know him. With all that being said, it's not a bad movie. Just slow, and sorta disappointing. Perhaps someone who enjoys teen dramas would enjoy this a lot more than I did.
