Why did you come to Finland.. That once was the question I heard from Finns I encountered. Now, a stare is all I get. Perhaps those stares are because the novelty of being a man of color in a land covered by ice and snow most of time has worn off. For me, my indoctrination is still novel. Only now I immerse myself more in learning more about the upper regions of the Arctic. Several months ago, I started following UArctic Thematic Networks. I don't get the updates I assumed I would and now I figure the aim of that community is is to pull younger audiences in. Makes sense to me. I will not live to see that region of the world become "over populated#. As this book here has be engrossed in its pages, one can learn. Finns talk of Sammi, Back in the states, we once talked of Eskimos. Now all we all do is think of CLIMATE CHANGE. This book delves into the arctic not so much from the perspective of Climate Change but that of cartography, exploration and the factors to drove nations given to competitions. Its appeal is to the adventure is us. Those forgotten tales of heroism and defeat. Handsomely illustrated, its a keeper.
