I've read a few of the one-star reviews, and I'd like to interject. Some have mentioned how the main family was portrayed as mentally ill. However in one of the episodes, Betty is shown tearing down her wallpaper revealing a wall covered in black mold. This can, of course, be looked at in two different ways. It could be looked at as a euphemism about the new family moving into the exclusively white neighborhood. Or it could very well be the reasoning behind the new family's mental instability. If these homes were all built at the same time, like many subdivisions were, there is a very good possibility many of the homes all suffered from the same structural deficits. We don't know though because we only see a limited view from Betty's perspective.
Overall I think this is a great horror-drama series based off historical behaviors/norms. My children watched a little with me and I was able to tell them how people behaved 70 years ago. They were shocked.
I personally don't think this series portrays the main family in any bad manner. It opens the door for conversations that may not have normally taken place. My belief is: The more you know, the better you do. And we've always got room to do better.
