It is overall eloquently written and interesting in large parts. Williams' problem is that there is (obviously) relatively little known about Dark Age Britain and, of that, he has chosen the more obscure realms of that time. He therefore has to extract every last ounce of historical evidence to fill up his book and the result is that he does waffle somewhat, saying a lot to, ultimately, tell the reader little.
