This would be one of the all time great westerns based solely on the story by Larry McMurtry and the two top notch leads—Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall at their acting best. The screenwriting for it was pretty darn good but the whole thing really suffered from some truly awful casting choices— namely Robert Urich, Frederick Forrest with a bad prosthetic nose to make him look more of a half-breed, a lot of the buffoonish, awshucks supporting cast like Ricky Schroeder, Barry Corbin, Chris cooper, Steve Buscemi and Glenn’s Headley, and whoever they got to play some of the Indians and Mexicans in the thing. Just awful. Beautifully filmed and epically proportioned, Lonesome Dove will forever be a “what coulda been” film were it not for a sad collision between its outstanding movie caliber pedigree and bad seventies television show vibe. Robert urich almost single handedly ruined a pretty good film. Still not a bad western—maybe top 20?
