Shuggie Bain is a fictional representation of the life of the author in a working class family in a mining community. It is actually a narrow minded, jaundiced portrayal of one persons experience of a broken home coping with a single parent with a personality disorder and alcohol problems. This is extremely unfair on hard working mining communities. I was brought up in two mining communities in the 50’s through the 80’s and have no experience of auld wifies wearing their husbands’ baffies, drinking vodka behind the garden gate. Miners pull together and travel miles for work. This book is very unfair
