I read this book when I was in the 2nd grade. I had always had an affinity towards animals, and the story of Mowgli's life among the wolves and his taking charge of his fate in the first story always captivated me. I was less interested in his other adventures in the books until I was a bit older. But all the books have useful life lesson's. And the poetry of the books are amazing. Yes, there are unfamiliar words.. Talon and Tush and Claw.. Look them up.. "As the creeper that girdles the tree trunk, the law runs both forward and back. " What is a creeper.. what does girdling mean? All great words to learn. And the basic life lessons, about the drought, about the greed of man, about the strength of the 'little people' who are the bees. And of course there is always the amazing tale of Riki Tiki Tavi, and the White Seal. If your child is interested in these stories as movies, skip the Disney versions and go for the Chuck Jones animated versions of them. They are 1/2 hour shorts with great animation and are faithful to the books. Narrated by Roddy McDowel.
