This book was a huge disappointment (to say the least). Incredibly boring story. And the ending is pathetic. I don't know how his editor allowed him to get away with it. Nothing is answered in the novel. You have a depressed main character (Alex) whose depressive state you get to experience throughout the entire book. Wow - that was fun! There is NEVER any answer as to 'what' are the turtles and their purpose. Or, for that matter, the purpose of the gigantic hole in the planet (which is the subject of the novel). And when Alex FINALLY, and I mean FINALLY, arrives at the alien-created fractal-emitting hole, nothing is answered. Just angel-like objects floating over it. No explanation is given as to what these entities are or their purpose. Why then write the novel? And then the novel just quits. What? I kept reading it hoping there would be a satisfying ending. That did not happen. Save your money. You can have my copy for free!
