Beautiful, breath-taking... hard to believe I had never seen or heard of this movie. I saw it on the Direct TV cowboy movie channel, after a couple of Audie Murphy and a John Wayne shoot 'em ups. And then this complex story of love and destiny began with a scene of four large horses pulling a Cadillac. Is this a comedy? Abruptly, the story switches to the 19th century and to a story a young photograher [n Paris falling love with an fascinating young Parisan girl and convincing her to sail with him to America and the American west.
Suddenly, a second story begins in which a vetinarian, James Caan, lives in the hard cowboy west with an lovely wife who wants to return to civilization in Philadelphia.
The two stories soon intertwine.
Much fore-telling and some English sub-titles. Long Robert Altman-like camera sweeps and charming dialogue. The two love stories are full of tension. The acting is absorbing. James Caan was more winning than I could ever have imagined he could be. The sadness and beauty were overwhelming. I pretty much cried throughout the entire movie..A few scenes were copied from popular American westerns, no doubt as a tribute. A lovely, familiar, sad musical theme.
Released in 1977... but looked and felt like it was made today.
