One of the first books that got me into reading! I swear Co Ho is literally built different! This story is a about a girl named Lily Bloom who opens a not-so-normal flower shop and Ryle Kincaid who is a neurosurgeon. We also have lily's first love, Atlas Corrigan who is bae to ne, altho I really wanted to see more of him in present and his character development. We don't have much bout him in the story as compared to Ryle, except in lily's journal. I loved Ryle a lot, but as the story progresses, my heart shatters. I wanted to see more of Ryle and Emerson too, but that's okay. I felt bad for all characters at some point but everyone got what they deserved. Not so happy story, but it encourages the readers to reflect about abuse and breaking the cycle. At the end, when lily said, "It ends with us" carrying newborn Emerson, I literally shed a tear.
Spoiler alert!!!
Honestly I fell for Atlas when I read lily's letters to Ellen Degeneres. He waited for lily to attain age of consent and his feelings were for raw and natural, the way he came back on lily's bday to spend time with her, his little gestures when he himself couldn't afford electricity and other things, when atlas opened his restaurant and named it after his special memory with Lily all that really warmed me. His protectiveness towards lily when he saw lily's injury caused by Ryle was enough to prove everything. When he said, "Next time, fall in love with me" and always waited for her, I couldn't read anymore. It was heart-wretching.
As for Ryle, he was a good guy but then he started abusing unintentionallly(by no means I justify abuse). The way he didn't care to ask lily for the naked truth when he found out bout the journals, and then abused lily was enough for me to hate him. I felt bad for him when he realized his mistakes, but there was nothing he could do to reverse it. Coho I hate you for first making us fall in love with Ryle and then showing him like that. The scene when lily asked Ryle repeatedly if he would ask Emerson to forgive his SO if he abused her in future, while both of them were crying looking at their newborn baby Emerson made me cry.
Anyway divorce happened and Lily got back with Atlas, while Ryle tried to be a good dad for emmy.
I recommend reading this book as it touches many sensitive topics bout abuse and living. My heart ached for lily a lot. I fell in love with her mom as well when she explained how abuses expand our limits. Anyway , this book is a must-read!
