Pretty alright first season, there are a bunch of issues, such as Ang barely having his personality or role in the group fleshed out. It feels like he's neglected for a lot of the episodes and ends up going off to do his own thing away from the group which basically hinders any bond to form between any of the characters for us watchers. Overall the group dynamic between Katara, Aang and Sokka aren't nearly as well fleshed out as it was in the cartoon.
Some of the clothing in a lot of scenes seem out of place, such as near the beginning when we are in Katara and Sokka's village, they wear these extremely clean coats that look like they were just washed and ironed, despite them walking through what looks like a snow covered wasteland, in the middle of nowhere. Their clothes also don't seem to be affected by the weather in any way. But this is just a small nitpick.
Other than that, character motives, themes and their inner conflicts are pretty well portrayed and it's clear that they will develop and grow them in further seasons.
Most of the time live action adaptations are used to heighten emotional tension and conflicts between characters since we can identify much more easily with a real person than a cartoon character, but I feel like most of that is lost here since you only see any of those emotional tension and conflicts between characters in fairly small scenes, primarily those between Zuko and Iroh.
As a standalone series separated from the cartoon, it is pretty decent, but if you compare it to the cartoon it is just objectively worse.
It's a 7/10.
