Today's CBS Sunday Morning (4/24/22): Good story on child care. Focus was on the challenges presented by the pandemic, with child care staff being laid off & not returning to work because they found better-paying jobs outside the field (Hobby Lobby--yuck). Dr. Leah Austin (Pres & CEO, NBCDI) gave a national perspective. A few wishes for CBS: It's child care, not day care--while the interviewees used the correct term, the reporter did not. (We changed the term in the 1970s bexause we care for children, not days. And we needed to differentiate from adult day care & doggy day care. There was no mention of the early childhood education provided by child care programs. Yes, the main purpose of child care is to assist working parents--& another important purpose is to provide an educational experience for the young children in centers & family child care homes. And the program didn't address how ridiculously low child care wages are (although you flashed a data shot at the end of the story), especially with today's important profession-initiated movement to raise child care staff qualifications. Please do better when you next report on child care.
