Can I just say that this was like the dumbest movie ever? Don't get me wrong- the acting is amazing- and I'm going to be completely honest and say that the only reason I watched this was because I found out Sabrina Carpenter was in it.
Tall Girl had some okay moments and the message about self-acceptance is great and all but the whole shtick of the entire movie is just so ridiculous, and I'm not even going to mention how many mistakes are in here (like when Liz was recording a fight with her phone, yet she somehow kept cutting to different scenes like she was filming a movie or something).
So this movie is about a girl in high school who is, surprise surprise, a tall girl. But like, who cares? The fact that she's the ONLY tall person in her entire school and/or town is just absurd! It's like Sierra Burgess all over again (except this movie is admittedly better for many reasons, including the fact that it's easier to root for the main character because she's not so conniving and manipulative). But anyways, literally nobody cares if you're tall or short and I can pretty much guarantee that there will definitely be more people around your height.
See, the writers had the right idea for a a theme. But their execution sucked and they could've picked any other topic that'll make a character stand out but not sound so ludicrous. This just shows how easy it is to completely ruin a film, which is honestly very unfortunate because the actors could've really shone through here.
It had the perfect cast and message to send to adolescents or whatever audience Netflix was targeting with this, but it's difficult to overlook the asinine struggle that Jodi, the main character, is facing. I'm giving this three stars; it could've been way better if the writers had just taken a different, more logical approach. But hey, this immense disappointment is partially my fault because for a moment, I forgot I wasn't supposed to expect too much from a Netflix rom-com.
