It's just the first episode, so time will tell. My initial reaction: I don't like it, because it's projecting our dark and distrustful world into the Star Trek uinverse.
Star Trek to me is about hope. It's about the betterment of mankind through science, exploration, and co-operation. If I wanted to watch a dark and distrustful world, I'd watch the news.
It seems to be en vogue at the moment to take popular franchises and project new interpretations on them, depending on the name and fanbase to carry it forward.
I'll add, without the characters of Data and Picard, and of course the shots of the Enterprise and the glimpses at Picards momentos, you wouldn't know this had anything to do with Star Trek.
I'll keep watching and see the direction it takes. But I really wasn't impressed with episode 1. Discovery took a few episodes to grow on me. Maybe it'll be similar with Picard.
