Whether the film was done well or not, the message that in order to appreciate life we have to appreciate death, that we need to think about death everyday, was what made the film. The ending didn't seem thought out. Why did he take the dog with him when he can barely take care of himself and what will happen to the dog when he dies somewhere out there on the road?
