Being 'close to nature' as they put it, is not always good. Ppl are social creatures and the more they interact with each other the better they fit in real life. Certain Steinbeck's characters are mental to a certain extent not the least bc they are out of reach with 'coarser realities of life'. This book is thought-provoking in many ways. It makes you feel that in reality 'every decision you make ... is the decision of who you are'.
