tldr: better than the movie; worse than the cartoon.
I enjoyed: some visuals (costumes, settings, cgi on animals and spirits, firebending), showing more of what happened 100 years ago, brutality of the fire nation, fanservice moments especially cabbage guy.
I didn't enjoy: some other visuals (being in the spirit world, all cases of earthbending are missing a screen shake, Aang during the avatar state, Azula wearing soldier gear), King Bumi and his identity not being a mystery, the lack of Aang waterbending prior to merging with the Ocean spirit, the missing story of the Deserter (the episode where Aang first learned firebending and burned Katara), the panda spirit HeiBai's story was never resolved, Roku's dragon was missing, plenty of people were characterized inaccurately.
It's unfair to expect a replica of the cartoon, copy and pasting every small detail, but I think a lot of key parts got lost despite trying to stay faithful to the source material. Some choreographies are just better animated, no matter what. And on the other hand, trying to do something original can lead to mischaracterization like how Bumi turned into a bitter old man instead of a mad genius. I personally wouldn't recommend this show to someone trying to get into the ATLA universe, but it's not an unpleasant watch especially considering the limitations.
