Maybe i wouldve rather watched it if they took another direction to the plot. Just remaking it based on the original makes it open to comparison to the original.
It made me compare every bit while even watching the first episode. It was really dull and lackluster and felt like twice the length of the episode.
Why it made me feel this way?
First is characters. While i commend trying another direction for the acting style it went more of a downgrade than an upgrade. Professor felt too clean and polished than the street smart and rugged look that gave the impression of being lower class. Berlin lost the swagger and "madman-esque" feel. Tokyo felt too forced to be edgy immediately for just the first 5-mins. I hated the direction they had with Rio by making him a jolly boyband type than the amateurish whipping boy trying to prove his worth.
Second is chemistry. Romance and relationships felt disjointed and blurry. With Professor and Lisbon we should feel like the schoolgirl being seduced by the football player but i got more of here's two middle aged people trying a one dimension flirtation. The team assembled felt like a ragtag group of people who would care less for each other than the family like ambiance you immediately felt in the original.
Third is setting and cinematography. It felt too clean and polished, too bright, light hearted and colorful. Like youre expecting less violence, less thriller. The beauty of the original is with more earthy tones, darker setting it set-up the anticipation of the hell they needed to pass to escape.
I liked te idea of another scenario for the country they have chosen. An even more political ideology trying to give emphasis but by sticking too close to the script it loses a lot of value since it fails in comparison to the original. Now it just feels like a Money Heist Script K-Dramafied trying to boast an even wider audience because of the Korean Craze which it didnt need. Such a real shame.
