*Spoilers in this review!
I admit that I was mostly lost and confused about the timeline of this movie the first time that I watched it. And when they started whistling “Lift Every Voice And Sing”...I was totally convinced that this was a time travel/supernatural/voodoo/crazy stuff but still fantastic movie. I’ve read many of the reviews on this movie and I am absolutely convinced that all of the bad reviews are either from people who just got too confused about the timeline and the fact that everything that seems to take place in the present is actually the PAST and everything that seems to be a dream or a past life/time travel nightmare is actually the PRESENT...OR...the people who are leaving the bad reviews are largely just racist. Maybe it’s not intentional and perhaps they don’t realize that they really are just afraid and they don’t even know that they don’t understand. I will not speak on the motives of people that I don’t know...but it’s ugly and not a “good look” for anyone. Educate yourselves on things that you don’t understand so you don’t look ignorant. It’s the only way to learn. I don’t claim to understand the issue of race in America. But I do understand that there is a HUGE PROBLEM and that we MUST DO MORE to make things better. We can never right the wrongs of our ancestors and we cannot change the events of the “past” from a historical standpoint...but we CAN stop them from continuing to happen. I cried throughout this movie. Several times, the first time I watched it. But the 2nd time I watched it left me shaking. I watched this for 2nd time yesterday afternoon and I am STILL thinking about this movie. I’ve been daydreaming about what would happen at many of these ridiculous “Civil War Reenactment” gatherings if several bus loads of People Of Color showed up? Not in a hostile or violent way. I do not advocate violence as a way to create change. It will create change...but it’s never the change that we want in the end. But just to show up and witness or even take part in these ridiculous and offensive (not to mention INACCURATE) cosplay events that glamorize “the good ol days” of slavery. There was NOTHING good about it and the south will NEVER rise again. It was barely able to get it up the first time. This is not only a 5 star film. It is also EXTREMELY RELEVANT to the world that we live in. Change is inevitable. CHANGE IS HERE. These changes are happening now and we are at a tipping point. HISTORY IS HAPPENING NOW and things could still go the wrong way if we don’t continue to DEMAND A BETTER WORLD FOR EVERYONE. Watch this movie. And then watch it again. And then share it with everyone you know and watch it with them again. There really are crazy people who would take us backwards in time if they get the chance. Refuse. ❤️
