A nice story with some humorous and endearing moments ruined by a lot of unnecessary locker room humour, and objectification of women and teenage girls. The boy becomes interested in the girl only after her step mother (to be) "tarts her up". What kind of message does this send to younger watchers? Surprised Drew Barrymore wanted to be associated with it. I'll leave it for others to comment on the portrayal of South African people and culture.

There's a lot to like about this film adaptation. Abby Ryder Fortson is phenomenal in the leading role. Actually all the young actors give great performances. Nice score by Hans Zimmer too. SPOILER... The only thing I'd change is the family dinner and subsequent argument scenes. A bit over the top.
