Putting it lightly, this movie is a horrible addition to the beloved Descendants series. Regarding the plot, it is not only rushed and filled with plot holes, but it is extremely unfulfilling. While understanding that the film takes place in the Descendants universe we all known of, it is a separate piece. With that in mind, is still disregards and disrespects everything beloved about the franchise.
To begin, in the Descendant's series Wicked World, we are introduced to the daughter of Alice. Her name is Allie, and she is obviously from Wonderland. This movie makes it clear that they have zero respect for what has already been established. They also write out another character who’s very prominent, Chad.
He is replaced with a new character “Chloe”. She is, in my opinion, extremely unlikable. She is supposed to be good and go through an arc that shows her that good and bad isn’t all black and white. Her mother in the past helps teach her this, but why couldn’t she have taught that in the future? I feel like that is a disrespect to the character they made.
To further emphasize the disrespect for the past films, it should be noted that there are many traits pulled from our beloved characters that are blatantly stolen. The characters show a few mannerisms we already know of, and the voices of the characters are extremely similar to ones we already know of.
Of course, it doesn’t stop there. Other characters are simply blatant copycats of some of the other cast. For example, the character Morgie. Not only does he not make sense as a character, seeing as Morgana/Morgan Le Fay isn’t serpent associated, he is a transparent copy of the character Gil. Morgie is clearly meant to be a sorry replacement for him.
I also feel that Red isn’t a very likable character we can root for. It may be claimed that her character development makes her likable, it is clear to us that villainous characters can be created while still being ones we can enjoy. It has happened in multiple other films. I also think Red’s internal struggles are stupid. I won’t spoil though. The emotional moment fails at its purpose because these are characters we have not connected to.
In my opinion, the only good characters were returning ones, except for Maleficent, I feel like she was not casted well whatsoever.
To reiterate my claim regarding the horrible plot, it is difficult to follow, as well as predictable in the worst ways. The ending feels so rushed and disappointing.
Lastly, the aesthetics in this movie are disgusting. It looks like they spent the entire budget on a single CGI shot. The color schemes are very one dimensional. In the original, the characters had distinct color pallets, but they used different shades. This movie uses a much narrower spectrum. Also, the wigs in this movie are horrid. I understand it’s better for many of the actors hair, but at the very least let them look similar. Chloe’s hair changes drastically from scene to scene. There is little continuity. It is clear there isn’t much thought to the set. You can tell which plants are plastic, like there’s not even an attempt to make it look real.
To sum everything up, the movie is poor quality in every aspect. It trashes a well loved franchise and it is a waste to watch. This movie feels like a cheap cash grab, and is not worth the watch.
