Nick Nolte's performance was spectacular. Even if he hadn't spoken a single word on the movie, I could literally see the machinations of his characters mind all over Nick's face. His desire for recognition and fear of disgrace cut through like a search light in the dark. I saw it too many times during my own military service. His face saving scene with Cpt. Staros was a masterpiece. Pvt. Witt reminded me of only one other person I ever met. I didn't know him long, but he made an impression on me that never left. So many young stars in this movie, I could write a novel extolling all of their performances.
