I used to love this show growing up as I felt that it helped me gain some tips and confidence in myself. Then once I began getting older I realized how mean this show was. It really has this attitude of "we're SAVING you!" but it takes a person's style, and conforms it to whatever is trendy right now. The part where they take all your clothes and throw them out really upsets me. There was one lady who had a whole beautiful collection of vintage clothes you cant find from just any store...and they got rid of all of it. The people are always attached to their "ugly" clothes and are forced to let it go no matter what. "Its what's best" the show hosts will say. During the trying on phase you can see some people are clearly not into it, and just picking stuff that will make the hosts happy. Then the makeover. Most people have no issue with the make up part. But they always ask women with long hair, "What are you hiding behind?" Then they chop all their hair off despite the women saying anything from please no I like my hair to straight up do not touch my hair length or I will walk out. More than one person has cried because the stylist cut off their pretty long hair after they said no.
This show likes to toot its horn about making women face real psychological problems but it takes more than just pointing those problems out to fix them. Stylists are not therapists. Some of these women had serious depression, not just self esteem issues. You cant just throw new clothes on a person and expect them to not be depressed anymore. Not to mention the people that had a nonmainstream sense of style that just was forced to let go of their collection. They'll paint it as some kind of "you're pretending to be someone you're not. All these clothes you like wearing are just a costume!" Like having an alt sense of style means there's something psychologically wrong with you.
This show does more cutting women down to fit into one small box than it does to build women up. It thinks highly of itself and has a huge savior complex. I feel bad for some of these people and I hope they learned to be themselves again.
