I haven’t read Brooklyn but did see the film. But I know Toibin’s work quite well. I found “Long Island” was a terrific read and Toibin at his best. As for the ending, I consider it part of the narrative in a sense that it has meaning greater than just giving the reader a shock. I don’t know if this will continue as a trilogy or not — and years separated this novel from “Brooklyn” — but I also doubt that Toibin will follow screen culture and produce sequels of that kind.
