Beautifully shot film with too many story threads and not enough story.
This film lures you in with a stunning color pallet, quirky camera moves, and an impenetrable plot that reveals details at a snails pace. The star power of the cast alone entertained me for a time, but each scene felt arbitrary and padded out to accommodate the disorienting amount of character, void of drama or stakes, and seemingly meant to dazzle us with the filmmakers intellect.
My partner and I joked that Wes Anderson is the new Tommy Wiseau. To us, we thought the real dramatic question was if Wes Anderson made the movie bad on purpose.
(Edit: a note for those who think you have to be an intellectual to enjoy this film)
Does a good meal need flavor and nourishment? Not necessarily. However, if I was served a meal that left me asking that question, I might say it was interesting, but I wouldn’t call it good. I certainly wouldn’t recommend that restaurant to strangers.
