In general, I am a fan of the Guilded Age. I'm also inspired by inclusion of the storyline which depicts an upstanding African-American family. That being said I am suspect of the storyline which depicts the rise of the suffragette movement. In particular it was shown that a diverse meeting of black and white women was conducted. Historically this was completely inaccurate. The suffragette movement did not welcome black women as it was seen (during a time when racism was rampant in America) that doing so would be a deterrent to winning the vote for women. So yet again in the hands of white writers who've dominated the written word historic, dramatic or otherwise, whitewashing ensues to gloss over the indignities heeped upon the African-American community at the time. In the future I would hope that the writers of The Guilded Age dig deeper to tell more accurate accounts of the African-American experience.
