Incredibly disappointing follow up game. If you were a fan of the original endless ocean games, like I was, I do not think you will enjoy this.
The “story mode” is very short bits of gameplay, sometimes literally just dialogue with no gameplay. There is one thing for you to do and no other creatures around you, so you can’t enjoy a dive at the same time as doing a story mission. In the original endless ocean games, story was part of regular diving, it was a lot less disjointed.
The randomly generated dive sites are soulless, and you very easily run into very rare creatures. I found Thanatos, the large legendary shark from the second EO game 4 separate times on the same dive (logged as 4 separate encounters so there were just 4 of them swimming about). Some areas are just completely bare sand. Prehistoric creatures are just hanging out in certain areas, you can just stumble upon them.
The fish glow blue until you scan them, so you can’t really enjoy a casual dive taking in the scenery without scanning everything.
I loved the original endless ocean games, and I was so excited to try this new one out, but it is ultimately a shell of the original. If they hadn’t packaged it as an endless ocean game at all, I would probably be less disappointed by it.
I really hope that the developers have some more plans to expand this game, but if it comes in the form of paid dlc, I will not be buying it.
