this movie is hyped as one of the best movies of the 80’s, and it’s completely clear why. though the concept is simple; five kids stuck in detention on a saturday, and the setting is singular the entire movie, the heart of the film comes from the characters. it shows people that everyone has a bit of everything inside them, regardless of what their appearance tells you. for example, claire standish. she’s considered a “shallow popular girl” with no regard for anyone but herself. it’s later revealed that she feels like she needs to have this image. needs to fill out the role. when she really feels stuck in society. it breaks all the stereotypes of how a character should act. it teaches you that appearances can be immensely deceiving. that being said, i have a few issues with the movie. one being the relationship between claire and bender. i understand that they had feelings for each other anyways, but i REALLY hate how bender treated claire that entire movie, until the very end. it isn’t very realistic that she would feel that comfortable and vulnerable with a guy that actually tried to assault her earlier. besides that, i find the movie pretty flawless, and a great watch for anyone. regardless of age, or even movie interest. you could enjoy old spy movies from the 60s or slashers from the 90s, and still find common ground in all the characters and their lives.
