Being rather impressed with the previous 4 movies, I had high expectations for this one. But reality is often dissapointing.
<spoilers (i think)>
The first 10 minutes were rather enjoyable, with the school reunion and all. But after the very, well, "intense" fight, the villain gets captured and Gru wins, woohoo, with his head nearly being cut off. This really gives me the anticipation of a huge fight in the end.
For the next hour or so, the movie keeps throwing boring/unrelated shenanigans about the new, undercovered life. The movie also gives the "hiding in secret but the weird neighbor kid knows who I am and will blackmail me" cliche, which is just rather boring and lame. The movie then goes on to introduce the "MegaMinions", which is a useless addition given they have no purpose whatsoever rather than giving the villain a "cherry on top of the cake" after the fight. And don't make me started on the random K-Pop songs throughout the movie.
In addition:
- "Being sent to a maximum security prison and making a threatening video to the protagonist"
- "The whole neighbourhood is awesome but our house is in shambles" cliche
- "There's only one name worse than yours and it's mine" cliche
- "Weird neighbor moving in and proceeds to weird people out" cliche
- "Just got a new job and failing at the very moment/getting an angry customer right when I started" cliche
- "Beating up a teacher with one move is funny because I am a child and he was mistreating my sister" cliche
- "Of course we mistaked our heist stuff for baby stuff" cliche
- "Being tracked by a GPS and immediately reveals where I am"
- "Beating the controlled mind using the power of father and son"
- "Getting together at the end of the movie"
The whole ending fight lasted 10 minutes or even less. Awesome sauce!!
I know the movie is made for kids, but I don't even know if kids even enjoy this wrecked plot being glued together of a movie.
Overall, this movie gets a "having a nemesis since a school talent show and getting along right after I send him/her to prison" out of "stealing the moon"
