An absolute rushed movie. I'm not even a fan of superheroes or that sort of theme/genre. But I can tell a bad movie when it is a bad movie. Let's get to the positive thoughts I have first though.
CGI and action scenes were absolutely well thought and choreographed. Stunning visuals were put throughout the film. Even when it isn't even necessary. Such as the scene where the main female lead tries to find Eddie but has a cop that tells her "that is isn't safe". The likable characters are only Eddie and Venom. The relationship they build within a matter of a few days (which the film feels like yikes) is enjoyable. The chemistry they flowed with each other is quite charismatic.
Now to the bad things. The writers were so lazy when making this film. The dialogues are so boring and dull for side characters. Nothing exciting from side characters. In fact they abuse their role so much it annoys me. They kill off characters with so much potential when they don't know what to do with them anymore. Their acting is nothing outstanding of course. In fact some scenes, it was terrible. Especially for the main villain. Why didn't they just go with the bad guy stereotype where he's bald and looks like the main thug of a bad business? There is nothing unique going with a skinny guy who just looks "smart". When he shouts, it sounds like he's yelling at children when he demands. It has no exaggeration or strong emotion. He just acts enough to get his point through. It doesn't feel "convincing" or "real". As for the girl who worked alongside him. I don't even remember their names after watching the film. It just shows how much I don't care about who they are or what roles they are placed. If they took her out the film, it wouldn't make a difference. She lacks absolute common sense too. Her excuse for not telling the police what's going on is because of her kids? I absolutely hate how much the marvel/dc universes lack the knowledge of the government. They just don't exist. Especially not with the supernatural. As for Eddie's ex, she's useless in this film. She's just there to fill in the plot holes they would have had if they didn't have her. And oh dear the weird bestiality thing Venom has going for Eddie's ex is so awkward and unnecessary. They just cover that up for humor/joke opportunities.
There is just so much awkward plot holes and weird unexplained incidents. How does Venom hear music blasting from the other side of the apartment door but not a helicopter coming from a distance? Lazy. An excuse for another dramatic and "awesome" fighting scene. The story does it no better either. Any cool fighting or well done CGI will never cover up a basic plot. The writers just thought, "let's make this as funny and action packed as possible". They lacked going in depth with the story. The fact that the movie is rated PG-13 just shows that they are focusing their main demographic at both adults and children. If this was a rated R, than the film wouldn't have to be so limited to what could be shown on screen. It takes away it's opportunities and potential. They tend to forget that the older generation grew up with the series.
Anyway this is going longer than it deserves.
I rate this movie "fanfiction".
The story seems like it was pulled out of wattpad fan favorite. Venom deserves justice and it's own series. This whole movie's plot is generic. But because of how much it drags, it deserves so much better from the producers who worked into this film. It doesn't need a movie. It needs episodes.
If you voted negative, or want a similar series, I recommend the anime series “Parasyte” or “Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuristu”. It does a better job with the characters and relationships within the main characters. You might be thinking, “ew anime that’s for kids” but trust me, it’s a lot better than you think. Of course with it’s own flaws.
