A Questionable Legal Portrayal in "Landman"
The latest episode of Landman delves into a dramatic and tragic storyline about an oil rig explosion and its devastating impact on employees and their families. While I was loving the show for its compelling narrative and high-stakes drama, this episode left me disappointed due to its portrayal of the legal discussions surrounding the settlement for victims, which raises significant questions about accuracy and fairness.
One particularly jarring moment involved the lawyers debating how to "cheat" the victims out of not just a fair settlement for loss of life but also their retirement savings, including 401(k) funds. This segment left me puzzled. The suggestion that such funds—guided and protected under ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act) and immune even in bankruptcy—could be manipulated in this way seemed implausible.
Adding to this perplexity was the portrayal of a sophisticated female lawyer, seemingly brought in as an expert, who appeared surprisingly uninformed about basic protections for retirement accounts. Was her depiction as a ruthless advocate for the employer, fighting hard to protect their interests, intentional? And if so, will her apparent lack of understanding—or perhaps ethics—be addressed in future episodes? It seems odd for someone positioned as a top lawyer to appear this incompetent or unprincipled without further context.
While Landman thrives on dramatizing high-stakes conflicts in the energy sector, I hope future episodes aim for greater legal and procedural authenticity. The series has the potential to educate as well as entertain, but it risks losing credibility when these depictions veer too far from reality.
