I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It was noticeably different from the prior attempts at launching the DCU. I thought the pacing and cohesion of the plot was spot on. I did not catch myself constantly wondering “did I miss something earlier” or “how much longer is this film?” The cinematography was generally bright but dark when needed. It did not feel like I was watching a movie filmed on a gloomy, overcast day by attempting to somehow blend the vibrancy of Superman with the gothic overtones of Batman. The characters were well cast and I felt the acting was enjoyable and well performed. Corneswet’s portrayal of Superman/Clark Kent was everything you could hope for in this role. He was heroic, compassionate, conflicted, angered, hurt…. he was just like the rest of us. Hoult embodied Lex Luthor in the way we had been missing. He made his hate, deceit, and jealousy palpable. He was not cartoonish and over the top as some of the more recent incarnations. Brosnahan was remarkable as Lois Lane. She was the intrepid reporter we have learned to expect. However, I loved how she was able to capture the soft human side that Superman would be attracted to. The rest of the supporting cast was integral to the plot and fit quite nicely. I did not see one individual that made me question their ability to act or wonder why they were chosen. Additionally I fell the other metas were great adjuncts to the film but did not overpower the main characters or seem ill fitted to the plot Admittedly I was a bit hesitant about this movie. The last attempt at establishing a DC universe was disjointed and caused me to invest hours into characters that were ultimately abandoned. Even the reboot of The Suicide Squad seemed out of place considering Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Flash were still active. Also I was a little taken aback when I learned they had moved on from Cavill and had gone a different direction. After seeing the movie, it now makes perfect sense. I believe Gunn wanted to distance himself and his DCU reboot from the previous attempts and start fresh. In my opinion, it was a brilliant move. I personally can absolutely foresee this being the springboard the DCU needed, similarly to how Iron Man catapulted the MCU to being the industry leader. I’m not saying the DCU will be as successful or dominant, but I wholeheartedly anticipate WB green lighting multiple new projects and I am here for it!
