A disappointment. Jack Antonoff needs to start experimenting, or stop producing for Taylor. All of his tracks sounded the same, and didn't fit the lyrics and what Taylor was trying to achieve with her stories. Aaron Dessner's songs were the only ones that seemed to have any originality and soul behind them.
The lyrics are passable. Granted, it would be hard to live up to all the hype Taylor and her team produced around this album and it's 'poetic, inspired nature', but it's still disappointing. Bring back Taylor's good lyrics from folklore and evermore. Those albums were unique and I didn't feel like I was listening to the same song 31 times.
The only ones I liked were Florida, So Long London, the Albatross and the Manuscript.
Some mediocre ones were: The Prophecy and Robin.
The rest I don't even remember and I won't bother too.
Not to mention that this entire album (double edition included) feels like a big sob fest. I'm all for sad songs that Taylor writes - peace, hoax, etc. But there's a difference between a good, tragic song and something that's just complaining. Swifts need to accept it - Taylor chose this life. She actively pursued it. She's a billionaire. She'll be fine, and the problems she tries to make relatable don't resonate.
Now, that doesn't mean people should hate on her for no reason. But there's two extremes here - one where people hate her for no reason, and another where people worship her blindly and think she can do no wrong.
Taylor is in her mid-30's. Why is she still seemingly clinging to past drama and relationships? Yes, those songs can be entertaining - but that's almost all we've heard her whole career, in different variations. Folklore and Evermore seemed to be a huge shift and growth in her as an artist, both sonically and lyrically. She expanded on creating worlds, crafting stories, while also maintaining the magic of writing about her personal life. With both Midnights and TTPD she's taken several steps backward.
She is a CONSTANT victim. It's tiring, and can't possibly be true 100% of the time. Is she entirely wrong? No. But it's exhausting to constantly be hearing how she did no wrong and all the men she dates are just terrible people.
She can do wrong. This album is proof.
