Debris has steadily improved with each new episode in terms of revealing the characters who are now hitting their stride as the actors mature in their individual roles as well as an ensemble.
The question of good and evil motives among the various characters is a bit murky as it should be since moral issues are often subjective and relative to the circumstances.
The biggest question of all has to do with the sentience and intentionality of the debris itself. Has it been sent here on purpose? If so, from where, by whom, and for what purpose?
It appears that the debris is far stronger than any group of humans who are trying to control it. It also appears that it is seeking to understand humans and searching out the moral impulses of Bryan, the male protagonist and CIA operative.
Bryan mysteriously appears to have a relationship with the "mind" of the debris. This alone makes the plot quite intriguing and begs for a second season. The story is worth telling! The last episode featured the "ball of light" which was beautifully rendered. I'd love to find out more of what the story tellers have in mind!
