Do NOT waste your money on this movie. Iโm one of the biggest anti-Trump people out there and this movie was absolutely unbearable because of its attempt to paint that demographic in a bad light. Iโm just gonna focus on that part of the story since itโs clear that was all this movie was trying to push.
Spoilers:
Just so weโre all on the same page:
Mark Ruffalo portrays Kenneth Marshall, a politician from Earth, who has failed to win the past two elections (already raising eyebrows with this one) and has resorted to the stars to fulfill his political campaign, with Project Niflheim. Marshall is portrayed as an oblivious fool and showboater. He even says in one of his speeches that this will be โthe greatest expedition in all of human historyโ (quite a bold claim there)
If none of this seems ridiculous, Marshall subjects everyone, Expendable or not (keep in mind, the whole Expendable thing is SUPPOSED to be the main plot line) to less-than-desirable living conditions; everyone is fed the exact same meals, down to the calorie, and itโs implied to be this nasty grayish purple slop every single meal. The living quarters are also grey, rigid, and during one of Marshallโs speeches, you can notice โNo Runningโ โNo Shoutingโ crudely spray painted on the walls. It just gives concentration camp or prison vibes.
So, with all that being said, finally, Marshall comes out for his first big speech. Tell me why, in space, there are at least 10 individuals scattered throughout the audience, wearing RED BASEBALL CAPS, faithfully and blindly cheering on Marshall and everything he does. Come on, are you serious? He holds his microphone exactly how Trump does and talks in this weird presenterโs/announcerโs voice, and always talks through his teeth with a larger than life smile. While showering in his praise after one of his speeches he even does Trumpโs little dance. Also, his wife is this weird amalgamation of infamous characters, as others have pointed out. Melania, Hillary, etc. I say this because sheโs the typical evil wife behind the scenes, sheโs the only one in this dark, depressing time wearing pink dresses, and sheโs obsessed with turning everything into saucesโฆ just gives you Silicon Valley evil politician vibes.
The two scenes that I canโt believe I didnโt walk out on were the dinner scene and the assassination scene. Yes, the main character attempts to assassinate TruโI mean Marshall, at a rally. You canโt make this up. a Red Hat Marshall supporter notices the shooter in the crowd, so right as they pull the trigger, the red hat guy reaches for him and saves Marshall by having the bullet graze his cheek. LOL.
This is like the movies you see whenever you see the right say, โtheyโre targeting me, theyโre attacking me.โ So this whole movie just feels like a giant jab towards Trump/the right, but ironically, they shoot themselves in the foot by doing stuff like this. Great, you have now quite literally shown these people that The Kingโs influence has reached space. Youโve literally immortalized him with this movie. lol.
I was being a bit hyperbolic here, but now, I wonโt be. This movie SUCKED.
