Director Terrence Malick grew up, partly, at least, in the town of Bartlesville, Oklahoma **( though he went to school in Austin Texas), where much of the film was made. He was at one time married to a French girl( second wife) for 16 years, whom he later divorced; he then subsequently married his high school sweetheart. If the film's plot does not appear to have a lot of linearity, it is partly autobiographical, and perhaps that is the way the director's and writer's life has played out.
