The Waste Land will forever be a watershed in English literature. The five sections each offer a distinct level of consciousness. Considering that a banker an ailing man away from home for treatment often separated from his wife and his life support, Elliot transcended beyond his mundane life and produced this epic poem. One is enthralled by many voices that speak to us through The Waste Land. His poetry is at the same time soft and giving while at other times is harsh with the vivid imagery that in the stony path of life there is no water. Parodies may have been written somewhat similar-themed poetry may have been published but The Waste Land of 1922 will ever stand as a precursor to open verse modern poetry which will always be read as a poem, as a book, and as a message to the modern generation to carry forth the subtly hard-hitting work of an intellect that was far ahead of its times.
