Tight, fast-paced plot and requisite pretty, haunted, (albeit) young detective who marches to the beat of her own drum and nearly gets away with murder every episode all in the name of getting "the bad guy." Definitely reminiscent (almost identical backstory) of Nancy Drew. Also reminds me a bit of Desperate Housewives in that a mysterious death runs under every episode and each provides a morsel that makes it easy to get hooked. I also think, like DH, season 1 was the best and least contrived season. The remaining seasons, while still held together by decent acting and a mystery of some sort, include so much criminal activity by the "so-called" good guys that I struggled to root for Veronica. I do understand the satirical nature of the series but it contained so many cringey moments and never addressed the grooming, statutory rape, patriarchy, misogyny, racism, classism, and prejudice occurring unchecked and often praised throughtout the series. A decent watch but only a pretty White girl with rich friends could pull off the shenanigans that make up just another day at the office for Veronica. Mars also possesses the luxury of not being rich herself, so while she often enjoys the spoils of her wealthy friends, she can still maintain her "woman-of-the-people" personna and slum it when it suits her.
