I want to start this off by saying that I am not a person of color or Native American, so take this opinion as you chose, but my opinion shouldn’t hold the strongest voice in this review section. So that being said, I was genuinely surprised when I went back and revisited this movie, seeing as it was one of my favorite vhs tapes at my grandmas but I was so disgusted at how we were portraying a Native American CHILD who was raped and abducted as a 12 year old girl. The way that media portrayed this tragic story of a little girl who deserves justice and movies like this further romanticized the colonization of Natives during the 1600s. They have several uses of the word “savage” being used to describe Natives and Natives are shown to be the ones who did the murdering even though it was the colonizers. It also shows lots of offensive characteristics of natives and got many of the traditional clothing wrong. Disney has also admitted that the making of this movie was a mistake, but still profit off of merchandise, as well as other things. If this movie has shown a fictional girl and a story on her becoming the next tribe cheif and falling in love along the way, this could have been a meaningful piece of representation for native kids in the 90s. If you want a good piece of native representation from Disney, I suggest brother bear. I would advise you from staying away from anything that is profiting off this movie. Disney please do better.
