I have to be honest here, I only got part way through episode two before I had to turn it off. I am a long-time fan of the Addams Family, and I feel that the entire point of them was missed here.
From episode one, everything is off. Wednesday is at odds with Morticia, is downright rude and mean to her own family. I get that Wednesday is cold-hearted and is homicidal, but she still loved her family.
Morticia and Gomez seemed on board with Wednesday attending therapy. WHAT. The only thing even hinting they might be 'meh' was their very subtle expressions, which told us nothing about their true emotions. Gomez even seemed cheerful about his daughter being among people who will help her. This missed the mark. The Addams family is known for praising criminal behavior, that was a main punchline in former shows, but here, they seemed less than stellar that Wednesday attempted to kill the kids bullying her brother.
They send her to a school for supernatural teens named after Edgar Allan Poe. This is at odds with the whole point of the Addamses. Originally, Morticia and Gomez adored their children and did not like sending them away, they didn't even like that their children had to be in a public school when you look at past shows and the actual source material.
Overall, this show completely missed the mark of what the Addams Family means. Instead, they threw in elements from Harry Potter, introduced us to characters I didn't care anything for as there was no depth, and the supernatural types were just... random. They felt random. And again, the universe they created for this had no depth at all, it was all so random. Not to mention whatever that thing was in the first episode... a werewolf? It looked so goofy I almost sputtered a laugh.
The writers seem to not understand the Addams Family and what it means. This show was clearly made for a younger teen audience, and with the underlying plot being around the several guys who seem to have the hots for Wednesday, it's a huge miss for me. I really wanted to like this show and I tried. I just can't, it's not good writing. I only give it two stars because the general look and vibe is awesome and Ortega makes an awesome Wednesday. The writers did not do her justice, nor their own story. It's very predictable, which didn't make me want to continue watching.
