I did not like the idea of changing the story of Halo at all. The first episode alone, with removing his mask, already left a bad taste in my mouth. The whole point is that it’s a mystery. Everyone loves a mysterious figure, and for Halo, it’s not any different. It’s one of the reasons Halo became so popular! Don’t change what isn’t broken! Also, the people working on the show had limitless lore and non-canon comics that are also popular to work with and yet they came up with their own random story for some reason. I would have loved to see a live-action of any of the games! Especially Reach! The reason Halo was popular to begin with was because of the story everyone knew from the games (and maybe from the comics as well), that led to the success of the franchise. By changing the story and all the characters, you tried changing the successful dynamic to a common unsuccessful generic one.
I do not know a single person who has watched this show outside of the Halo fan base, so the large majority of viewers probably did not want to see chief’s (emotional?) face. I didn’t see it was a “woah. That’s awesome!”, I saw it more as an insult to the Halo community. They intentionally did that first episode in so that they can be condescending I feel like. Like they can do whatever they want with the show and just ignore what we really wanted as a community.
Let’s talk about chief supposedly being “emotional”. He is a walking war-crime that has been harshly and militarily trained, injected with chemicals, chemically castrated, and war torn since he was a child after being abducted from his parents. And you tell me he’s not supposed to be a machine? He isn’t supposed to be the emotional type, but even Halo: Infinite did decently well showing off a tad bit of humanity. It wasn’t with teared eyes or being outwardly emotional, it’s the small quotes and thoughts he shares throughout. You don’t need to see his face to know what he must look like when undergoing stress or sadness or a fight, the helmet mixed with the people watching his story (us) can create our own creative reality. I think that would’ve been the best thing they could’ve done to this show. It ultimately adds more engagement for the viewers of the show.
I like to think he’s constantly stoic in every situation because, you know, his entire past that’s transformed him into machine who ultimately falls in love with an AI. It’s a strange but beautiful dynamic between man/machine, and AI and I wish they delved into that a lot more.
One last thing, the fight scenes were pretty cool I have to say, but the master chief I know didn’t fight like he does until Cortana took over. I know it’s to keep the drama and entertainment going but I want to see master chief shred a lot more often. He’s nicknamed “Demon” by the covenant for a good reason.
