Absolutely amazing movie. While not a 100% recreation of the original story, it really takes the cues from the tone and makes it it's own.
The story has many layers, about redemption, friendship, honesty, caring for and standing up for others, obedience.. I'm sure there is more, and all of it so well integrated and articulated.
The art and animation style is definitely on another level. The detail in the scenes, the palette of colors used, the settings. It was all so well done.
People complaining about the war themes and imagery. One thing that I have not seen in any reviews are all of the obvious cues to the Looney Tunes animations of the era. World War 2 was a common theme for children in those days. The imagery of Mussolini could have been lifted straight out of a Looney Tunes cartoon.
My take as a parent, I would have no problem showing this movie to my 8 year old child. The themes are mature, but not awful. Important conversations can flow from these types of themes and stories. And isn't that what this story is all about? Being real, and true to yourself and those you care about.
